Exit Questionnaires & Interviews
Exit questionnaires, interviews and surveys are a powerful tool for understanding why employees leave – and how organisations can improve. Much more than an opportunity to retain an individual employee, they are an essential part of a company listening strategy and done well, they provide:
Actionable Insights:
Learn the true reasons behind employee turnover. Discover patterns and opportunities for improvement that could otherwise be missed.
Improved Retention:
Use exit feedback to implement changes that keep the best talent engaged, reducing the cost and disruption of constant turnover.
Enhanced Company Culture:
Identify pain points, improve workplace policies, and enhance employee satisfaction to create a more positive, engaged, inclusive and productive work environment.
Risk Mitigation:
Exit interviews help identify potential legal or compliance issues, allowing HR colleagues and management to address them before they escalate.
However, conducting exit interviews in-house often comes with challenges. It is time consuming for HR Teams, can be challenging to turn the feedback into actionable insight, and employees may hesitate to be fully transparent, fearing the impact on future references or their professional reputation. That’s where MI-Say comes in.
Partner with MI-Say and benefit from our impartiality and independence. Here’s why that matters:
Unbiased Feedback:
Departing employees are more likely to be honest and open with a neutral third party. We create a psychologically safe environment that encourages honesty from leavers.
Confidentiality and Trust:
Employees trust our independent approach, which ensures that they speak freely without fear of backlash. This leads to more accurate, candid and detailed insights.
Consistent Process:
Our experienced team conducts interviews using a standardised methodology, ensuring consistent, comparable data that drives clear, actionable results.
Time and Resource Savings:
Free up HR teams and managers to focus on strategic initiatives while we handle the time-consuming process of scheduling, conducting, and analysing interviews and feedback.
Data-Driven Reports:
We provide real time dashboards and comprehensive reports with detailed analysis and key trends, helping our clients address root causes and make informed decisions for the future.

Exit Questionnaires & Interviews FAQs
At MI-Say, we conduct exit interviews via online surveys and telephone interviews. We have a standard exit questionnaire that can be adapted to suit your business. Our survey is in depth and covers much more than just reasons for leaving.
Exit interviews are an excellent opportunity to understand employee experience across the whole lifecycle from Recruitment through learning and development, Job Satisfaction, Management, Leadership, Remuneration and Recognition, Culture and Off-boarding.
With MI-Say, data gathered from both online questionnaires and telephone interviews appears in your real-time dashboard and further insight can be gained from thematic and sentiment analysis and reporting.
Exit interviews and surveys provide the most valuable and honest insights when conducted by an independent external expert like us because employees are more likely to share candid feedback without fear of repercussions.
When the interviewer is not directly affiliated with the employer, it creates a safe and neutral environment, encouraging departing employees to speak openly about their experiences, challenges, and reasons for leaving. This unbiased approach helps uncover underlying issues that may not surface in regular internal feedback processes, providing employers with genuine insights into areas such as management effectiveness, workplace culture, and employee satisfaction.
Ultimately, independent exit interviews enable businesses to identify patterns, make data-driven decisions, and implement meaningful changes that can improve retention, employee experience, organisational performance and culture.
The MI-Say exit interview process is designed to provide employers with deep, unbiased insights into employee experiences and reasons for leaving. Here’s an overview of the process:
- We work closely with the employer to understand its goals and specific areas of interest for the exit interviews. This includes customising the interview questions to align with the company’s values, culture, and feedback needs.
- If conducting telephone interviews, MI-Say coordinates directly with departing employees to schedule a convenient time for the exit interview. This ensures that the process is seamless and respects the employee’s time and availability.
- Where surveys are completed online, the MI-Say team will call leavers to encourage participation.
- The information gathered is anonymised and systematically analysed to identify patterns, recurring themes, and areas of concern.
- This data is then provided in a comprehensive report, highlighting key insights and actionable recommendations.
- Reporting is provided at an agreed frequency, providing detailed feedback and suggested strategies for addressing identified issues. This report can help organisations improve retention, refine policies, and enhance overall workplace culture.
- If requested, MI-Say can offer follow-up consultations to help the employer implement changes based on the feedback received, ensuring that insights from the exit interviews lead to meaningful improvements.
Our pricing for on-line surveys and telephone interviews is detailed in our pricing section. Reporting is bespoke and priced individually for each customer depending on frequency and reporting requirements.
This varies from employer to employer and is impacted by the quality of leaver data and how well the process is communicated internally. MI-Say’s response rates for exit interviews and surveys range from 45% to 80% but we are disappointed by anything less than 50%!
