Are You Listening?

Transforming Employee Experience & Business Performance Through Listening Strategy

The best employers are the ones who want to know how their people feel about work. Certainly, over the last decade, there has been a huge focus on employee engagement in pursuit of discretionary and positive behaviour, which we know makes good business sense.

Nowadays, conducting engagement surveys has become the norm rather than the exception. These surveys are an important tool in an organisation’s toolkit to gather feedback and insight into how people are feeling.

However, engagement surveys are just one piece of the employee experience jigsaw. To properly understand what people are thinking, feeling, and need, we must build and implement a comprehensive listening strategy.

 What is a Listening Strategy?

In today’s working environment, there are demands along with expectations for managers to listen to their employees who in turn are expected to have their voices heard. Listening has a tremendous and positive impact.

A listening strategy incorporates principles to utilise employee voice behaviour, recognising, understanding, and responding to the employee’s needs and opinions which can facilitate the development of quality employee-organisation relationships.

A listening strategy is a holistic dynamic approach which gathers insights from employees eliciting employee voice which enables organisations to do something with the data gathered. Done well, listening strategy can influence attraction, retention, engagement and advocacy.

Listening is an important element in forming and maintaining psychological safety, trust and good relationships with the organisation. Empirical evidence has highlighted when managers are poor at listening to their employees it can result in employee burnout, low engagement, dissatisfaction, and high turnover.

Why is a listening strategy important?

There are endless benefits for employees and organisations when a high-quality listening strategy is invested in and implemented which include:
